Summary: Among metallic nanoparticles, gold nanoparticles have been recognized as
promising tools for biomedical applications due to their biocompatibility and ease
of operation. Therefore the objective of the work is to synthesize, characterize
and evaluate the cytotoxic activity of gold nanoparticles reduced and
functionalized with extract of Punica granatum L. The characterization of the
nanoparticles provides information about the synthesized nanoparticles, such as
the shape, size, concentration, state of distribution, functional groups of
compounds that are stabilizing and/or functionalizing the nanoparticles, among
others. There are different techniques to characterize colloids, such as: visible
ultraviolet absorption spectroscopy (UV-visible), infrared absorption
spectroscopy (FTIR), Raman spectroscopy, zeta potential (PZ), dynamic light

scattering (DLS) and transmission electron microscopy (MET). AuNPs-
pomegranate did not show in vitro cytotoxicity levels corresponding to treatment

in murine fibroblasts (L929) and human keratinocytes (HaCaT) respectively. The
extract did not present quinone reductase induction activity at a concentration of
100 μg/mL, however, the nanoparticles presented quinone reductase induction
1:10, although they were not yet considered active. The synthesis of gold
nanoparticles using pomegranate shell extract was successfully investigated and
a simple, optimized, reproducible, low cost and non-toxic method was proposed.
